Instructions to make Basbousa:
- Preheat oven to 350°F
- To make syrup- Bring water to boiling point with sugar and lemon juice. Once syrup reaches boiling point, reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 5 to 6 minutes. After syrup thickens from simmering, add rose water & simmer for 1-2 minutes. Transfer syrup to jug to cool down.
- For Basbousa- Mix semolina, flour, coconut, sugar & baking powder.
- Melt butter as you beat the egg.
- Add milk, beaten egg, melted butter & almond extract to Dry mixture and mix well til smooth & combined
- Butter the inner baking tray & transfer mixture to tray.
- Using Knife, cut the basbousa into diamond shapes thus making 12 pieces.
- Transfer tray to oven and bake for 30 to 40 minutes until top of Basbousa is golden brown.
- Trace cuts made with knife.
- Pour the syrup over baked basbousa and leave to absorb.
- Preferably serve after an hour has elapsed with a cup of Moroccan Coffee
